A Texas native, Dr. Michael Ryan received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and his MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He completed his internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and completed his fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedics at the Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Ryan is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery and is the only orthopedic surgeon in Bend who holds a Board Certified Subspecialty in Sports Medicine.
At Desert Orthopedics, Dr. Ryan specializes in Sports Medicine injuries for all ages. He sees adults and children with both acute and chronic sports injuries. Conditions may include ACL or Meniscal tears and other joint injuries to the knee requiring arthroscopic or open surgical repairs.
Dr. Ryan also specializes in Children’s Orthopedics as the only fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedist in the region. He sees children for sports medicine injuries or fractures and congenital deformities. He enjoys working with children and young people, particularly the intellectual challenge of working with a wide variety of conditions that require up-to-date medical expertise. In that regard, he has also conducted research on the developmental dislocation of the hip.
Dr. Ryan is very involved in local sports associations as a team physician for the US Ski Team, medical director for the Cascade Cycling Classic and event physician for the Pole Pedal Paddle. Dr. Ryan is also an educator for Mt Bachelor Ski Patrol and medical director for HooDoo Ski Patrol.
And, he’s an avid outdoor adventurist who enjoys skiing and cycling, often in the company of his wife and two children. As a musician who plays the guitar and sings, you’ll see him often contributing his time and talents at many charity events.
