Cast Care
Good cast care is an
important part of the healing process. We recommend the following tips for good cast care:
-A cast should fit
snug but not tight. You should have good blood return on all of your toes and
fingers.
-Casts should be properly elevated throughout the day to keep down excess swelling.
-Casts should be kept dry at all
times. If the cast becomes wet down to the padding it must be
removed as quickly as possible. The skin is unable to dry out on its
own and can become emaciated.
-Avoid putting anything down your cast to “scratch” your skin with, such as a
ruler, pencil, or coat hanger. By doing this you can accidentally
scratch your skin and cause an infection.
